Belated Update – Week 24. The Holiday Edition!

A peek at the past week (how I’ve been): It was a busy week for week 24! The beginning of the week saw an unexpected job interview for me. I didn’t end up getting the job (being 24 weeks pregnant probably had something to do with it), but I got to practice my interview skills and I got some great feedback. We had a really intense week at work as we prepared not only for the holiday shut down, but the launch of a completely new system going into place on the 2nd. The beginning of the week also held my work Christmas party, which was a blast.

Some holiday decor
Decor and a reminder of our loved ones
One of my Mum's fused glass pieces and some holiday bling

My holidays started on Friday the 23rd, so I’ve been lucky enough to be off for a while now :D The 24th we went to my brother-in-law’s place for an amazing dinner and to watch a movie. Christmas morning itself was very quiet for Pat and I. We didn’t do anything until the evening when we went over to S’s Dad’s place for Christmas dinner. We had a wonderful time and were made to feel like part of the family. It was exactly what I needed.

Hilarious and awesome gift! Non-Alcoholic wine from S <3

How far along am I? 25 weeks, 2 days.

I am thinking… about how lucky we are. Our friends and family made this a great Christmas. I can’t believe that next year we’ll have an 8 month old!! Spending so much time with our niece and nephews made us really anxious to hold our little man. Can’t wait!

I am thankful for… See above! I’m a big ball of love this week!

From the kitchen… Lots! Once the baking was done, I decided to break out the crock pot and try two new recipes (both found on Pinterest, btw). The big big hit of the week was Beef Stew, from this recipe. I was really worried about this one. The meat we bought was about to expire, I threw it together quickly in the morning before work and accidentally set the crock pot to cook on HIGH for 10 hours, rather than low. I was so sad when I got home to discover this. Luckily, I got home early and was able to turn it down and saved it (it ended up cooking about 7 hours at high, and then an hour or two on low). It turned out SO WELL. Seriously, it was incredibly tasty and fed us for days. Not only that, but I was happy as a clam to eat this for every meal for days. Can’t wait to make it again. (Sorry, it was too tasty to photograph. I was too preoccupied with eating it. NOM)

The next attempt was this Chicken Cheese and Broccoli concoction, from here. I was pretty nervous about it initially, because broccoli is now on my “Do not fly” list due to terrible gas pains caused by my casserole. Was really liquidy, but tasty. Definitely needs more veg and…something. Did ok though.

I am wearing…Lots of new clothes! This is a bit of a cheat, because technically it’s Week 25 news, but Pat got me a ton of new clothes from Thyme during their boxing week sale.

I am creating… Not much this week, aside from our baked goods.

I am going… to take it easy. I had big plans to do lots of cleaning and decluttering this week, but instead it’s turned into a wonderful week of friends, family, and spending some quality time with Pat. I couldn’t trade it for the world.

I am reading… Some more baby books (my SIL lent me some reads on baby sleep) and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin, as well as rereading one of my favourite series: Outlander. Don’t judge me. Those books are AWESOME. I’m actually on Voyager now.

I am hoping…for some patience, calm, and strength in the new year.

I am hearing… Lots of holiday music, the new Florence and the Machine album and the new Mumford and Sons single:

Around the house…Nothing new, yet.

One of my favorite things…Spending time with our loved ones. We’ve been so spoiled by this the last couple of days. I’ve loved it!

Weight Gain: 20 lbs! All of a sudden! This is what happens when I bake like mad and eat some amazing Christmas dinners!
Baby in the Produce World: According to The Bump, we’re still a papaya, however, according to Baby Centre, Liam is about the size of an ear of corn.
Movement/Signs of the Baby: TONS of movement. I’m actually feeling him at night now. Starting this week (week 25, again, cheating I know), we can actually see him move around. I’m feeling him in my ribs a lot these days.
Cravings and Aversions: Beef Stew, sweets, milk.  Aversions: Not so much an aversion, but I’ve discovered that all those gassy foods are KILLER to me now,  so I’m having to avoid all of my favourite veg :(
Body Changes/Weirdness: Still having pelvic pain, and lots of discomfort in my hips and back if I sit in one position too long. Starting to swell a bit and I am definitely waddling now.
Other Random Babeh/Pregnancy thoughts: We’re starting to plot about the nursery and what it’s going to be like to have our little man here. We’re having some good discussions about parenting and our plans.
Other Pictures from this Week:

An awful picture of me, but Pat is too cute not to post.

Holiday Whirlwind

As I approach the holidays, I find time almost seems to speed up, picking everything and everyone up as it goes, getting more and more intense and busy as we near the centre.

Firstly, Happy Yule to everyone!

Seasons: Winter - Silence of Wings by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

We’re not doing anything specific to celebrate, though I did throw the fixin’s in for a beef stew for tonight, so I think that’s a great feast dinner. We also have some left over holiday baking, so we’ll have some tasty mint brownies for afterwards.

Today is my last day of work before the holidays. The college is closed until the 2nd, so I’m looking forward to a week of sleeping in, decluttering, preparing for baby and getting things done that are often forgotten (for instance, changing my name in all of my official documents!)

This weekend is going to be busy for sure. Tomorrow I’m baking for gifts and parties. Saturday we’re celebrating Christmas with some family, Sunday we’re celebrating Christmas with my girlfriend S and her family, and then on the 27th we’re getting together with my in-laws for a casual holiday celebration.

Pat and I aren’t doing much in way of gifts this year, as we just can’t afford it. I have a secret planned for him, and he got me some things that I’ve been eyeing for ever:

Urban Decay's Naked Palette
Clinique Black Honey lip gloss

So excited! :D I don’t talk about it much, but I love make up. Love it. Especially eyeshadow. I have a really hard time justifying the cost of good quality makeup, so its not often that I go out and buy something for myself. I will make due on most things. I’ve wanted the Naked Palette for as long as I’ve known about it. Black Honey was brought into my world by the amazing Pixie, and I was finally able to have one for myself! :D

We also splurged and got him some pampering at a barber shop (he always shaves his head, and while it’s not very fancy, he loved the attention to detail that this barber gave him) and got my eyebrows waxed by one of the specialists at Visage.  It was awesome! Again, such a little thing, but I always feel so much better about myself when I have that sort of thing done by a professional.

Aside from shopping, I also recently had an appointment with my midwife and I can’t believe how quickly this pregnancy is flying by! Seriously, we’re already talking about what to do when we get to the hospital, what to pack, circumcision and what tests and scans I have left before baby. In fact, I only have one more appointment at our monthly intervals before switching to every two weeks! Eeep! And we start prenatal classes on the 3rd! It’s super baby time all the time now!

Meanwhile, because, you know, life isn’t busy enough, I’ve fallen in love with the idea of learning to quilt. I’m thinking I might try to take a class after Liam is born to get me out of the house every so often. I’ve been sewing for most of my life and I LOVE quilts, so it’s a natural progression for me. I have to scope out some of the class options in town.

Anyway, whatever you celebrate, may it be awesome and full of love and laughter!

Tuesday Update: 23 Weeks

A peek at the past week (how I’ve been): It’s been a strange and busy week 23 for me! Lots of Christmas/Holiday parties, lots of baking, cleaning and time with friends and family.

How far along am I? 24 weeks, 1 day.

I am thinking… about our holiday and renovation plans.

I am thankful for… all the tasty treats that are at the office lately! Chocolate everywhere!

From the kitchen… Lots, but mostly cookies. This week I tried baking gingerbread for the first time (Ginger cookies from Bridgehead is one of my all time favourite things in the world, so I had to give it a shot) and was really happy with the results. I used this recipe. I also made mint brownies again (made them the year before last), and unbaked cookies/frogs/haystacks/macaroons. I will be sharing the family recipe for the unbaked cookies in the next couple of days, so keep an eye out.

Unbaked cookies, setting.

I am wearing…Same ol’, same ol’. Hoping to pick up some new sweaters and shirts for myself soon, as I’m quickly growing out of EVERYTHING. Liam is apparently ginourmous.

I am creating… lots of baked goods and another post for the Ottawa Mommies. (post should be up soon)

I am going… enjoy my time off. The college is closed for the holidays so I get a week off (sadly, unpaid). We’re planning on resting and decluttering. Hopefully we’ll get the basement done in prep for the renos!

I am reading… Some baby books (namely re-reading The Baby Book by the Sears family) and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin, as well as rereading one of my favourites: Outlander. Don’t judge me. Those books are AWESOME.

I am hoping… for some luck. I may have had a job interview today for a full time permanent position on campus!

I am hearing… Nothing new, really. Listening to a lot of holiday music. Namely, the Michael Buble Christmas album.

Around the house…Nothing new, yet.

One of my favorite things…An appreciative audience when I provide baked goods :D

Weight Gain: about 10 lbs, though I haven’t checked in a while.
Baby in the Produce World: Last week we were a papaya, this week we remain the same. Odd.
Movement/Signs of the Baby: Lots and lots of movement! Liam actually kicked so hard he moved my arm this week! Also, at our office Christmas party yesterday, the guy sitting next to me on the squishy couch got kicked by my little man :D
Cravings and Aversions: Same old, really. Lots of sweets and chocolate.  Quiche? Aversions: Not so much an aversion, but I’ve discovered that all those gassy foods are KILLER to me now,  so I’m having to avoid all of my favourite veg :(
Body Changes/Weirdness: This week (week 23) I started noticing pain in my pelvic area really wasn’t going away. In fact, it was getting worse. I did some research and will be talking to my midwives about it asap. I think I may have symphysis pubis dysfunction (aka SPD, more info here). Sounds like I have to ramp up my prenatal yoga efforts.
Other Random Babeh/Pregnancy thoughts: I got to spend time with a beautiful 10 month old boy at a potluck this weekend and it made me SO EXCITED to get to know my little man and to see his personality develop. Cannot wait!
Other Pictures from this Week:
23 weeks, 4 days. Sudden belly pop!
Big Belly goes to Christmas parties! 23 weeks, 6 days.

National Geographic Photos

A fly by post just to share this amazing post from Marvelous Kiddo, featuring  some amazing birth photos that were a part of the National Geographic 2011 Photo Contest. There was some debate concerning this photo (warning: photo is of a woman giving birth) and whether or not it’s been staged. Here’s a blog entry from the photographer’s page, written by the mother in the photo. In my mind, this absolutely is a raw moment and is absolutely beautiful. Yes, she’s wearing makeup. Yes, she’s wearing jewlery. You know what? Those are some of the perks of delivering at home. You can wear whatever you want. :P

Tuesday Update: Week 22

A peek at the past week (how I’ve been): It’s been an interesting week. The beginning was very normal, not much to report. I started a babyli.st registry online.  Midweek, due to stress, dehydration and overdoing it at work, I started getting Braxton Hicks contractions and bad bad gas pain. This resulted in my wheels screeching to a halt and forcing myself to take it easy (so no full moon group). I did some really minor decorating around the house, which cheered some of my Christmas blues. I worked on some estate stuff and did some cleaning.

Over the weekend, I got together with S & K to get our registry done at Babies R Us. S surprised me with a gift that she and the rest of my BeeMaids got me (My BeeMaids consist of S, L -from Montreal- and my sister, Tracy. They were my bridesmaids and are my best friends in the whole world). They had heard me bitching about my coat, and saw my post here, so they pooled together and got me a new-to-me winter coat!! They also included some organic baby wash and a starbucks gift card! Just when I was starting to feel really isolated and lonely, my girls absolutely spoiled me and reminded me how loved and blessed I am <3

Me and my new coat! <3

How far along am I? 23 weeks, 1 day.

I am thinking… about how close we are to being done with the estate. I really really hope things go smoothly from here on out (but I am realistic in the expectation of drama to come). Also, how fast December has gone by!

I am thankful for… my beautiful warm new coat, my amazing friends and chocolate.

From the kitchen… Nothing. We’ve been too busy. I was planning on making some stew this week, but I don’t think I’ll have time for it.

I am wearing…MAH NEW COAT. Sorry, it’ll be a while before I get over that. Oh, and here’s another picture of me in it:

Yep. Love it.

I am creating… Some holiday decor. One of these items was the ever popular yarn wreath that has been booming all over pinterest and craft sites. My version involved some creative thinking on my part, as I had no felt with which to make flowers. I decided to use some of my Mum’s old Christmas decorations and am really happy with how it turned out:

I am going… to many a shindig this week! Tonight, we are off to the monthly (or so) Wing Night w/ his work buddies. Friday is the hubby’s birthday, so I’m treating him to dinner and maybe a movie. Saturday is his BFF’s annual Christmas party extravaganza (they normally have 50+ people show up). Sunday will involve baking and cooking, followed by a Christmas potluck dinner, hosted by our friends Lara and Markian (Markian was one of Pat’s groomsmen). Monday is my office holiday potluck as well!

I am reading… Some baby books (namely re-reading The Baby Book by the Sears family) and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin

I am hoping… My belly calms down. I want to be able to enjoy all the upcoming holiday grub!

I am hearing… More of the same ol’. OD’ing on Neko Case these days. In relevant news, Wil Wheaton just discovered Neko Case and tweeted the following:

Wil Wheaton

wilw : I have to thank @SlackerRadio for telling me I’d like Neko Case, because I like Camera Obscura, S&H, and Rilo Kiley. The future is awesome.
Wil Wheaton
wilw:  Dear Neko Case: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE I LOVE YOUR MUSIC SO MUCH. Not creepy at all, Wil

Around the house…No change from last week. A sick hubby, lots of dishes and lots of laundry and dust hippos.

One of my favorite things…New work friendships, my husband laughing at my impression of dance music. Uhns! Uhns! Uhns!

Weight Gain: about 10 lbs, as of today.
Baby in the Produce World: Last week we were a papaya, this week we remain the same. Odd.
Movement/Signs of the Baby: We can actually see some of Liam’s movements, which is awesome. He’s definitely getting bigger and stronger, and I’m feeling him in new and wonderful places (oh, and not so wonderful places. Some seriously awkward places)
Cravings and Aversions: Cravings: Not much, actually. Still milk, cookies, chocolate milk. Unfortunately, my belly is getting sick of milk :( Aversions: Nothing new really. Don’t enjoy the smell of burnt toast (Talking to you there, husband!) or cooking ground beef.
Body Changes/Weirdness: Really terrible gas pains have started this week. Not sure where it came from all of a sudden, but it’s been awful. Also, of course, the Braxton Hicks contractions. Weirdest feeling ever! Oh, and according to friends and family my belly looks very different now.
Other Random Babeh/Pregnancy thoughts: I’m starting to mentally prepare myself for Liam’s arrival. We signed up for prenatal classes today, which start in January. Shit’s getting real, yo.

Daily Life, Pregnancy

Fun times. So, yesterday afternoon I had my first (that I actually recognized) Braxton Hicks contraction (BHC). This on its own is totally normal for anyone past 20 weeks, so long as you don’t have a whole ton of them. What wasn’t entirely normal was the tummy pain/discomfort I had for the next 8 hours or so. After talking to one of my amazing midwives, I’ve been reassured that I’m doing ok. I just have to keep myself de-stressed and well hydrated. Basically, dehydration and stress are two of the main causes for BHC, which pretty much summarizes my day yesterday. I was working overtime (my co-worker had an appointment, so I had to cover the desk) and because we’re under staffed right now (everyone seems to be sick right now), I was running around more than usual and not drinking as much as I normally do.

To add to that, I have the joyful addition of indigestion/heartburn to add to the mix, and stress related tummy troubles. I’m doing ok today, with only some discomfort and tightness. I’ve been given strict instructions not to overdo it at work, no more overtime today and I have to take all my breaks. Unfortunately, my co-worker has gone home sick, so I’m leaving the department in a bit of a lurch. Oh well, not much I can do about it.

While all of that excitement was going on, I forgot to post about my first published blog post! I finally submitted my first posting to the Ottawa Mommy Club Mommy Bloggers, and it was published yesterday. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine. For those that want to follow my parenting/pregnancy related posts there, you can find my page here.  This posting is about the difficulties new parents face in the information age.

So, no worries! I’m doing ok, and am very proud of my first published piece.  Now I just need to figure out how to not over do it while cleaning the house tomorrow, and registering for baby stuff on Saturday. Weee!
